Winning Project by Matthew Geller, ‘Sixty Weak Knees’
Lounge ! became a way to explore how Arthouse's space could become a temporal social space utilizing the building in a more dynamic and public way. In collaboration with Kevin Alter, Dean of the Architecture Department, University of Texas, Austin, a call was sent out to emerging architects, artists, landscape designers to re-imagine a temporal space in which film screenings, lectures, concerts, sound programs and a library could exist simultaneously. We received 125 proposals, possible and impossible, which were then displayed in the gallery offices. The selected proposal, 'Sixty Weak Knees' by Matthew Geller was commissioned and constructed. Geller designed wooden seats and tables that floated off the ground and swivled around as swings. Tables were designed to flip upwards to become film screens whenever necessary had fittings for embedded iPods for the sound program.
