Without You I'm Nothing
3 interventions: Daniel Bozhkov, Danica Phelps, Julieta Aranda + Anton Vidokle
Platform Garanti, Istanbul
October 2003
Each project addressed the street and mercantile culture of Istanbul, and proposed an intimate exchange through a public commercial transaction.
Daniel Bozhkov did an apprenticeship in a local ‘simit’ bakery (simits are Turkish pretzels with sesame seeds). He introduced new forms of baked goods based on an index of obsolete Ottoman words remembered by his ailing Bulgarian mother. The simits were sold in the traditional fashion by Bozhkov on the street and documented by film.
Danica Phelps, known for chronicling her every transaction, made drawings of each of her street purchases at the Grand Bazaar and showed them at Platform.
Anton Vidokle + Julieta Aranda, printed the first of their newspaper series, ‘Popular Geometries’, offering tabloid-like sindicated news coverage concerning public sculpture both loved and hated around the world. These were disseminated throughout the streets and public sites of the Beyoglu district.
Organized as satellite projects to the 5th Istanbul Biennal curated by Dan Cameron.
Supported by Fluent~Collaborative and The Roy and Nuita Titus Foundation and Artists Space.
