Antimonumento

September 2005, InCubo, Santiago, Chile

With the invitation to visit InCubo and do studio visits in Santiago, I responded with a project to understand the context of the city and its history through the eyes of its artists and reconsider the traditional format of studio visits.

About the Exhibition
16 studio visits were arranged as walks throughout Santiago and Valpairiso at one-hour intervals. Each artist was asked to show me an ‘antimonument’ in the city, however they interpreted it (a nod to Gordon Matta-Clark). At the time of my visit, the former dictator, Pinochet was still alive, and statues and monuments to his regime were quietly being dismantled. Locations we visited included: a barbershop for kids, an underground tunnel system, a neighborhood with odd lawn ornaments, and a chapel hidden inside a shopping mall.
